Bragging rights...

So school is getting into the swing of things...and I already have students making excuses for missing class/missing quizzes/etc. Some of them are funny, some are lame, and some are are real. So on the very first day of class, when one particular student said he was going to be missing class this week, my ears were perked. He went on to say he would be missing class in order to compete at Elite Track Nationals...so of course I said I was jealous, wished him luck, and offered extra office hours to help him make up the work :-).

Today, I replied to his latest email with a request for a meeting time...and I discover not only did he just "race" in Elite Track Nationals, but he happened to become the new U23 Kilometer TT National Champion! So I just had to say Congrats to Matt Post, who also happens to be in my senior ME design class, and races for UCSB Cycling!

ok matt....if you read this blog...take careful note of Olaf and Chester's comments! :-)

And Chatterbox: Most of the excuses are not so cool or valid...after 8 years at this game, I always think I've heard them all, and then something tops it! Maybe a top 10 list will be a future blog post!

Doc - Being a ME myself (though I just stuck with the BS, haven't gotten to PhD - Piled Higher & Deeper), I made every effort to attend classes; no excuses - if I missed one, I talked to the prof about making it up, getting lecture notes, etc. Remind them - they're adults now, their education is only as good as the effort THEY put in. Missing classes is not going to make things any easier...nor give them the education that employers are looking for. Aside from that, I think the Top 10 list would be very, very funny. I look forward to reading it!

On a much lighter note, I also agree with Olaf and Chester - that jersey should be hanging in a place of honor...in your office!
Nice to see you're grooming the future of cycling in your classes.

Better excuse than any I ever came up with for missing class ;-)

Pretty cool. Now you know who can mentor you when you decide to make the drive south to try out some track riding.

one of my students (a 13-year-old) just joined a junior team and races road and cross. it's so fun to watch them cause they also love you for being their teacher.
