Doc - sorry to hear about your (too) close encounter with mother earth. Compression fractures are nasty. At least it's the off season - think of this as enforced rest. And training for your tush (lots of seated trainer time). Hmm...there's a project for your students - develop a device to help you balance when you stand up one-handed on the trainer!
Bummer. A trainer is a good idea for some things. When I had both arms in casts in 2002, and when I had my left hand in a cast in 2004, I was able to do time on the trainer as long as I did not put weight on the hands/arms. Just a lot of 'no hands' trainer time .
this was just the first orthopedist NP that I saw...I'm not sure I'm willing to accept it. I'll be calling a highly recommended sports medicine orthopedic surgeon this morning for a 2nd opinion...
And yes, I am already on the trainer :-) Yippeeee! Nothing like long trainer workouts to send the mind into complete numbness....
I am a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at UC Santa Barbara. My research is in the area of MEMS (more at www.engr.ucsb.edu/~tmems), and my hobbies are all things dog (I have 2 setters) and my newly found passion for bike racing!

You could get a Computrainer. Then you could pretend you're climbing the Alps. http://www.racermateinc.com/computrainer.asp

Heal fast, find some good diversions.
