Daily Poll

I've decided to have some fun with this blog, by instituting a weekly poll :-) I must admit that the idea for today's question came to me after the whole pop-tart confessional on velobellababble.blogspot.com today (it made me laugh audibally while IN a session at this conference I'm stuck at today...almost got in trouble!). So...here's your chance, friendly commenters, to tell all your secrets (or mislead your competition)!

Question of the day:

What is the wierdest thing you have eaten during a race?

I'll start the answers off: The bug of unknown type that flew into my mouth last week in the Walker Basin RR. Must have made the difference...since i won! ICK!!!

Ciao!

i used to swear by chocolate covered espresso beans during the run of triathlons. i'd pack a baggie with 1 to eat at the end of each mile. they made me puke one race which really took the fun out of it...

puking is not fun. But it sounds like they were good while they lasted!

I haven't really eaten anything weird during a race, because that can backfire. But, I did once have Turkish Coffee, pita and dill yogurt during a century (Strawberry Fields). Yum!

mmm. you go to better centuries than I do! I did have a beautiful ride this morning up in the mountains...and I ate a pop tart at the top!
:-) chatterbox--good luck tomorrow!!!!!!! Hope you're feeling better.

drkim - the century of which Ms. Chatterbox speaks is no run of the mill century; one of the draws is the food. They even had an expresso machine out in the middle of some strawberry fields south of Watsonville so you could get your fresh latte to go. That century was our warm-up for our ride from Bordeaux to Barcelona starting the next week, looping through the Pyrenees along the way. One of the good things of (non-racing) riding in Europe is that there is usually a bar or restaurant at the top of the big climbs :-) It may have been snowing at the top of Stelvio, but we could get hot pasta carbonara to warm us up! Gotta love it!

I like animal crackers and PBJ sandwiches on my adventure rides. Peanut butter filled pretzels too.

i ate some strange red berries on a mtn bike ride when I was 15 years old when I was bonking and lost and cold and far away from home.

if i am hurting enough I will eat anything.

that said, my good friend who is an ex-pro mtn bike stud was bonking so bad once in a race that he stopped and picked up an already eaten powergel and squeezed out the remaining calories. desperate!

strange red berries, espresso beans, pb-n-j...lots of variety...
but...
the winner of this week's poll is the unnamed dude who gary mentions that squeezed the remainder out of a powergel....hardcore!

PS. i raced with someone last weekend who was eating a gel when a sketchy rider in front of her caused her to have to put the brakes on....and said powergel squeezed all over her bike/hands/gloves/handlebars/self. Talk about gross...

And then there was marian's dream about going to the grocery store the night after winning the race, and finding nothing there but gu's!

powergels may or may not help with race nutrition..but they sure do lead to good stories.
